Someone recommended me to be Buhari's running mate - Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has given an insight into how he got to his present position, saying somebody somewhere recommended him for the job.

He was speaking at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja late Wednesday at a dinner in honour of over 200 graduates and beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

Osinbajo, who confessed that he was never a politician, also hinted that somebody gave him a helping hand to become the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2015 general elections.

The vice president, however, did not name the person who recommended him for the position of the nation's number two citizen.

"I was in a group of young men and women, and one of them asked the question: how did I become vice president? I was never a politician or anything like that. So, I tried to explain it is quite simple that someone somewhere has to recommend you. Somebody somewhere has to give you a helping hand.

"Whether to be a vice president or to be an aircraft pilot or to be an engineer, somebody somewhere has to give you an opportunity. And I think that all of you that are here today are the beneficiaries of the opportunities that you have somehow received.

"And this is why this event is so important. I think that it is one way we have to remind ourselves that we are bound as individuals to give opportunities to everyone," Osinbajo said.

It would be recalled that Prof. John Paden, the author of President Muhammadu Buhari's biography titled "Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria", had claimed in the book that Buhari chose Osinbajo as running mate "despite enormous pressure" from a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu's supporters and loyalists had since faulted the claim, asserting that the former governor of Lagos State single-handedly nominated Osinbajo as Buhari's running mate.
