Buhari picked men from the streets and made them ministers - Yakasai

Alhaji Tanko Yakasai in one of his most recent interviews, made some startling comments possibly suggesting President Muhammadu Buhari took some people from the streets and made them ministers. He argued that the President and his ministers are not on the same page.

He said, "One of the problems we have is this presidential system we are operating that made provision for the President to appoint anybody from the street and make him a minister. Or in the states, the governor can pick anybody from the street and make him a commissioner.

"The best way to deal with the situation in our hands is to make sure ministers or commissioners come from among elected members of the legislature. If they are going to be elected, they have to go and campaign.

"If they are going on campaign, they have to sell the manifesto and programmes of the party. In the process, they will be able to educate themselves and Nigerians on programmes of the party, so that by the time you appoint them as ministers, the programmes you are implementing is not theirs but the party’s. They will commit themselves to implementation of the party’s programmes."

He added that the situation we found ourselves in the country today is unfortunate, but that sacking ministers may not entirely be the solution. He advised the President to be sincere in his appointments by bringing in trustworthy and competent hands with the capacity to help him succeed.
