APC senator who is representing Kaduna central, Senator Shehu Sani, yesterday said 16 of the 17 years of democratic governance in Nigeria were wasted by “a patently corrupt political elite.”
Reflecting on the country’s democracy, Sani, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, said “we must be honest to ourselves and bold enough to accept that 16 of our 17 years of democratic governance were wasted by a patently corrupt political elite.
“The ship of the Nigerian state perilously sailed in a sea of overwhelming greed, state sponsored thievery, institutional larceny, a hyper culture of cronyism and pursuit of illusion.
“Over the years, we witnessed a steady rise of inter-ethnic disorder and religious belligerence. A maintenance and sustenance of an economic and social order that enriches a few and impoverishes the many continued to reflect the image of our democratic journey.
“We are also still unable to cement inter sectional distrust or achieve a ‘non-enforced unity,” he said.
